Feel part of the world again…

Clare

I lived in Lichfield for most of my childhood and more recently I have moved back here with my family, Peter my husband and our children Rebecca and Ben.

Lichfield Re-Cycle shared the idea of this project with me back in 2017 and since then I have been working with a great team to get this project off the ground.

I love cycling, I play hockey when I can and I’m really looking forward to building this project with the help of the Lichfield volunteering community.

I has been part of the team since 2018, and assisted with fundraising , writing policies, volunteer recruitment and finance.

Since taking early retirement I have helped to set up and run two innovative social enterprises and was the founder of Low Carbon Lichfield, which works to promote carbon reduction, energy saving and sustainability.

I have lived in Lichfield for over 40 years and am married with two grown up children and four grandchildren. My wife Jane and I celebrated our golden wedding in October 2018.

Cycling gives many and me a sense of freedom, of being ‘in the moment’ and in the great outdoors be it town or country. Cycling has also been my saviour since childhood when my only good means of travel for work or pleasure.

I spent much of my working life as a children's doctor working in special needs , and aware how limited choices of these young people can be .

I am excited that we can give people of all ages and disabilities the opportunity to escape to the freedom of the outdoors cycling on 'The Big Red Bike’. Bring joy . And raise the profile of cycling and its value.

I was twelve when my older brother and I renovated a 1936 Claude Butler short wheelbase tandem, and that was only the beginning. But a bike is not only about exercise, it’s the opportunity to enjoy the countryside at a comfortable pace and go somewhere different. Fast forward, and after we had raised our family of four, my wife and I are leisure cyclists enjoying quiet rides along country lanes and encouraging others to join us, especially on ebikes.

I saw immediately the thrill of this bike for those for whom cycling is a memory; the opportunity again to spend time in good company out in fresh air and sunshine. So I became involved in what I believe is a wonderful project that brings a great deal of pleasure to those who only see the countryside from the inside of a car and are rarely able to make new friends with a diverse group of like minded people.

Predictably in retirement my interests are walking, cycling, maintaining a stable of bikes and reading…and my family.
